AMS Members:
If you are not protected by any anti-virus software, or do not keep that software up-to-date, you
are heading for a lot of problems that will cost you dearly in time and dollars. Your lack of attention to
protecting yourself from viruses is affecting the AMS emails. Please invest in
such software for your own protection.
I have added some links below to let you see the more prevalent types of viruses we battle every
day. There is even a link that will give you a "Free virus scan". The free scan is not a
substitute for purchasing and keeping your own virus protection up-to-date.
I go to great pains to ensure that everything on the AMS web site is free of viruses. The links
on our pages can be trusted. The code that needs to be downloaded for the "Free virus scan" can be
trusted. So why are we getting these annoying stock report emails? Viruses,
once loaded on someone's PC, have been known to read the mailbox and extract email addresses from them,
create similar addresses, mail these addresses to other hosts, and send emails with "spoofed" email
sources. The only way to combat these actions is to use virus protection software.
Please help us to combat these viruses within our AMS Community by using up-to-date antivirus software. Thanks!
For a more in-depth discussion of email spoofing and virus proliferation, see this article by
Robert Vamosi, CNet Senior Associate Editor, and
Brian Martin's "Tenacious Spammers" article, and
Doug Thompson's rant. These guys have a way of saying things that I should not.
